Design Inspiration

Anybody visiting London’s V&A Museum this week would have encountered a playful scattering of contemporary exhibits that offer a refreshing contrast to the Museum’s permament collection (rumoured to be in excess of 4.5 million objects).

The V&A is the first port-of-call for this years London Design Festival, nine days in September where the city’s pivotal role in global design is showcased across hundreds of venues in city. Reflex send me (armed with only a camera) to check it out report back…

About 3 weeks ago I bought myself a copy of Don DeLillo’s ‘End Zone‘ for a bit of summer reading. I can unashamedly admit that this choice was strongly influenced by the cover!

Whilst browsing for some inspiration today I was delighted to discover that the cover is part of a series of ten powerful illustrations by ‘It’s Nice That’ and Noma Bar…

Noma Bar:
“After a long process that involved in reading, researching & sketching, I started to pull out some of the main elements of each story and tried to understand how Don DeLillo tailored them together. The result is a bold image for each cover that can looks conventional at first, but at second glimpse reveals the whole story.” (from Picador’s blog)

Note: I have not yet got around to reading ‘End Zone’, but when I do you can be sure I’ll enjoy looking cool on the underground with Noma’s cover.

When face painting gets serious…

Posted by: Henry Rivers | Comments (1)

Today we’ve put together a showcase of works from some of the most creative minds in fine art body painting. If you thought face painting was all about pink butterflies and comedy moustaches, prepare to think differently.

Note: this post does feature a spotty leopard painting… but not the sort you would find at a village fĂȘte.

The subject of today’s post was originally intended to be ‘Vintage Adverts’ or perhaps ’50 Inspiring Vintage Adverts’.
I set about my research (on none other than www.vintageadbrowser.com) and came across a collection of amusing 1950s Budweiser adverts – naturally the subject was set to change to ’50 Inspiring Vintage Beer Adverts’.

After some further research I was surprised to find that a popular theme in vintage beer adverts was lobsters… and so I arrived at a new title for today’s post – ‘A Brief History of Lobsters in Advertising’.

Some designers showcase their photoshop skills by distorting people’s faces, others make surreal montages using dolphins and elephants, whilst some just simply isolate colours to create ‘cool’ images… this post is about designers who go a little bit further and create entire cities.

One advantage of creating a city yourself (rather than taking a photo of a pre-built city) is that you have total control of the weather. Digital artists spend days creating these insanely detailed images – one thing you can be sure of is that they are going to choose weather that is appropriate to the style of the city. For example a city with industrial style steel skyscrapers would probably have a menacing stormy sky.

This post celebrates cities that are not only blessed with perfect weather, but are also located in stunning natural landscapes…

A Masterclass in Vibrant Colour

Posted by: Henry Rivers | Comments (1)

Here are 27 photographs that share at least one thing in common. They all use strong colours to create a sort of arresting / ‘wow’ effect.

Some photographs look better in black and white – I would venture that these images don’t. Themes include shoes, underwater, the colour red, and Michael Cera from Superbad.

Wine Bottle Design Awards 2011

Posted by: Henry Rivers | Comments (3)

Lets face it – the design of wine labels is important.

For those of us whose knowledge of wine goes little beyond red and white (I think there’s a pink one too) the appearance of the bottle is the only fall back we have when browsing the shelves. Here at the reflexstock blog we’ve decided to pay tribute to designers who have excelled in various areas of the field (or should I say vineyard) of wine bottle design.

Please enjoy this post responsibly!
