24 Award Winning Photographs
By Henry Rivers
“The Three Wisest Monkeys in the World”
Following up from the previous post, here are 24 stunning images from this year’s International Photography Awards. We’re slightly dubious about some of the categorisation, but as far the images are concerned we couldn’t be much more impressed.
Note: Look out in particular for some breathtaking images of storms, tennis and bridges and elephants.

Trees: 2nd Place Winner Alex Bernasconi
A surprisingly competitive category amongst photographers. This tree didn’t take first prize, but we liked the optical illusion… if you thought there was a starry sky in the photo – you’d be mistaken.

People: 1st Place Winner Lucia Herrero
Martin Parr watch out – this is image is not only awesome it also promotes healthy tanning (either than or spraying something else on your back – I can’t really tell).

Nude: 1st Place Winner Laura Pannack
Nice to see a slightly more light hearted image taking pole position in this category (not your textbook abstract student style nude)

Nude: 3rd Place Winner Simon Harsent
…and a more conventional winner from this category

Political: 2nd Place Winner Antonio Faccilongo

Underwater: 1st Place Winner Bartosz Strozynski
Anyone who’s seen the BBC ‘Life’ documentary series would know Bartosz was very brave to get this close to a Leopard Seal!

Personality 1st Place Winner – Nadav Kander

Book, Landscapes: 1st Place Winner Shane Lavalette
The first of the slightly dubious entries… we like the picture, but apparently if it’s in a book a landscape is allow to be a person.

Landscapes (proper): 1st Place Winner Shane Lavalette
Now that’s what I call a landscape!

Landscape: 3rd Place Winner David Ryle
Here’s another, just to confirm what a landscape is.

Book Other: 3rd Place Winner Mike Powell
I wonder who is happier – Mike with his top quality photo or Nadal with his big win?

Other image from the same series. Good photo but a shame he missed the face.

Nature: 2nd Place Winner Alex Bernasconi
Another fantastic image from Bernasconi

War and Conflict: 3rd Place Winner Jorge Dirkx
Possibly the best image not to get a 1st Place, Jorge gets our vote.

People, Other: 3rd Place Winner – Ximena Etchart
10 points if you can guess what this event is.

Wedding: 1st Place Winner Silvia Encinas Beltrán
By the looks of it one of best weddings of the year as well.

Bridges (Professional): 1st Place Winner Sharon Tenebaum
My favourite thing about this category as that it is listed as ‘Bridges – Professional’. Makes you think how many professional bridge photographers there could be in the world.

Bridges (non-pro) 1st Place Winner Rafal Krol
You can tell the difference.

Nature: 1st Place Winner Thorsten Milse

Lifestyle: 3rd Place Winner Jason Lindsey

Industrial: 1st Place Karolina Karlic
I think what’s happened here is somebody has got confused between Industrial and Urban.

People (non pro): 3rd Place Winner Tim Wu

Nature, Book: 1st Place Winner Thorsten Milse

I didn’t see a single photo of elephants, as promised at the start.
Rhinos yes. Elephants no.
Otherwise, excellent.
