By Robert ReaThis week Reflexstock is interviewing Ashish Asthana a 35 year old designer from India who studied Fashion design student in National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, India but didn’t finish the course as he wanted to pursue multimedia design such as the work he has proved us with today.
.
What is your favourite part of the design process?
Concetualization. After going through the brief, I like to meditate upon the story and let some imagery emerge in the mind. The idea is to come up with an idea which is simple and effective. Something that conveys the crux of the story to the reader and holds the attention at the same time.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Recently I’ve started working in the comic medium, and it has been very exciting. I’ve been working on a graphic novel for some time now and I’ve enjoyed the experience. In near future I see myself doing more comics. However I don’t like to restrict myself to any plan as such. I like to have a simple vision and then improvise. So future is always open.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Inspiration comes from looking at the energy in other artists artwork or performance. It’s not necessary that it has to come from any visual. For example, when I hear Miles Davis play, the energy and improvisation is so awesome that I wonder if I could translate that energy into a visual form.
Who is your favourite designer and why?
This is a tough one, there are many. But if I have to choose one I’ll say its Gipi, the Italian illustrator. His easily drawn lines give shape to amorphic forms; added with watercolour wash, its pure magic. His images capture life in it’s raw and gritty form, stripped of any pretension. His story telling ability is equally capturing.
Have you been looking for work/done interviews-how many/how long? And what type of jobs are you looking for?
I’m in New Delhi, India, and I’ve been regularly doing illustrations for newspapers and publications for almost eight years now. I’m mainly an ‘editorial’ illustrator and interested in comics. I would be rather happy to do editorial/comics job.
What would you like to gain from this exposure?
I hope to get some more serious assignments which are challenging and exciting.
What else interests you and motivates your creativity?
Movies, music, coffee and cigarettes.
Any other points?
Illustration is not much different from kung fu.
